Nocturne is held in the palm rather than pointed at anything. The oval form fits the hand without a grip, and the whole body conducts the vibration instead of concentrating it at a tip — which is why it reads as slower than its intensity count suggests.

The motor is the quietest we could source that still delivers a low-frequency pulse: at its first setting it is quieter than a refrigerator hum. Three intensities, one button, and a form that disappears into a closed hand or a closed drawer.

Why this piece exists

Nocturne began as an internal joke — 'the one you can use with a flatmate home'. The brief that came out of the joke was serious: the quietest motor we could buy, in a body heavy enough to stay put, with no shape that suggested what it was for. The oval pebble is the result. It reads as a stone, it sits in a closed hand, and at its lowest setting it is quieter than the refrigerator in the next room.

The whole-body conduction was the engineering risk. Pebble vibrators usually put a motor in one spot and dampen the rest; we let the entire shell resonate, which wastes energy and cuts the intensity count to three, and in exchange gives you something that feels like the object itself is humming rather than a part of it buzzing. Nobody who tries it asks for more settings.

Who it suits

  • Shared households — the quietest piece we sell, full stop
  • People who hold rather than aim; the pebble wants a palm, not a plan
  • Second-piece buyers who already own something focused

Who it does not suit

  • Intensity seekers — three settings, all gentle by category standards
  • Anyone who needs a pointed or insertable shape; this is a palm instrument

Use and care

Everything we know about keeping it.

Before the first use

Charge fully before first use. Wash with warm water and mild soap; the pebble has no seams on its body, so cleaning is quick. Dry the single charging contact.

Cleaning

Fully submersible — rinse under the tap, then dry. Do not use silicone-oil cleansers, which leave a film on the matte surface.

Storage

It lives happily on a nightstand without a case. If you pack it for travel, the felt side of the First Light box holds it snugly.

Long-term

The pebble has no seams on its body, so there is nowhere for residue to hide and almost nothing to maintain: rinse, dry, charge. The single contact point is recessed, and the only failure mode we see is lint in the recess — a dry toothbrush once a month settles it. The battery's sleep mode means it holds a charge for a season, but give it a top-up if it has been in a drawer since spring.

Material safety. Platinum-cured silicone, phthalate-free, non-porous. Clean with warm water and mild unscented soap or a silicone-safe cleanser; avoid alcohol and silicone-based lubricants, which dull a matte finish and can leave a film. Full detail in the materials guide.

About this piece

Is 38 dB actually quiet?
It is quieter than a fridge hum (about 40 dB) and about the level of a library whisper. Through a closed door it is inaudible; under a duvet it is nothing.
Does whole-body conduction feel weaker?
It feels different — less like a point and more like a hum in the hand. People who buy it for intensity return it; people who buy it for discretion reorder it as gifts.
